What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of a person's memory using cognitive tests. An evaluation consists of an interview and testing. Your test results are compared to individuals who are similar to you. You may be evaluated using tests that assesses your ability to pay attention, learn information, reason, perceive information, problem solve, use language, organize and plan information, and your motor abilities.

When is Neuropsychological Evaluation Needed?

A neuropsychological evaluation is recommended for any individual who is experiencing changes in their cognition (e.g., concentration, memory, reasoning ability, language) and/or personality. Neuropsychological testing will determine your strengths and weaknesses in your thinking. In addition, neuropsychological testing can determine if your memory problems are significant enough to be a neurological disorder such as dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease). Testing can also determine whether or not you need a memory medication to help keep your memory stable (e.g., Aricept).

In addition, a neuropsychological evaluation can provide you with information about how your cognitive functioning (i.e., attention, learning, memory etc.) is before there is any problem, which would allow us to measure any changes in your cognitive functioning at a later date. Finally, a neuropsychological evaluation can assist you in planning for your future needs

Questions that a neuropsychological evaluation can answer include:

• Do I (or a loved one) have Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease?
• Can I (or a loved one) live independently?
• Can I (or a loved one) manage my finances?
• Can I (or a loved one) make health care decisions?
• Can I (or a loved one) drive safely?
